Annual Civic Events

Annual Civic Events

The Lord Mayor attends and hosts many events during the year of office.

The following civic events, however, take place every year. The Civic Office are responsible for or have input into their organisation.

Mayormaking

The Annual General Meeting of members of Council takes place in the Town Hall Council Chamber, in May every year. It is at this meeting that there is a Mayormaking Ceremony. This is where the Lord Mayor, Deputy Lord Mayor and High Bailiff are officially appointed and so begin their civic year.

Civic Service

The Civic Service is held each year, shortly after the Mayormaking ceremony, and takes place in consultation with the Lord Mayor but is usually at the Cathedral Church of St Martin, Leicester.

The service celebrates the inauguration of the new Lord Mayor and is attended by civic heads and all sections of Leicester’s communities.

Remembrance Sunday

The Day of Remembrance is held nationally each year on the nearest Sunday to the 11th November. The service at Victoria Park specifically provides the opportunity for Leicester citizens to formally pay tribute to all those who have given their lives in the service of this country.

The Lord Mayor, as first citizen of the City of Leicester, takes the lead role to ensure that the Remembrance Day is commemorated and that the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal is fully supported.

Leicester's Citizen of the Year

A Citizen of the year and a Young Person of the year are chosen by the Lord Mayor each year. Prospective candidates may be nominated by members of the public. The winner may have demonstrated, for example, a devotion to voluntary work, courageous acts, or bravery in overcoming adversity or other qualities perhaps as a leading figure in the local community.

Christmas Light's switch on

The Christmas lights are switched on every year, usually in November. The switch on of the Christmas lights in the Town Hall Square is traditionally undertaken by the Lady Mayoress.
