In the early days of the
Portmanmoot and the
Gild, both bodies held their meetings in the open, on ground next to the Church of St Nicholas.
But in 1251 the Gild of Merchants obtained a house for an annual rent of 16 pence and two capons in a lane which later became known as Blue Boar Lane.
The Blue Boar Inn in Blue Boar LaneShortly after its purchase, the Gild conveyed the property to the Mayor and Burgesses of Leicester for their benefit and the building became known as the Town Hall.
