Councillor Abdul Osman has been Ward Councillor for the Charnwood Ward since 2007 and from 1993 to 1997 served as a County Councillor for the
Wycliffe Ward and continued to the City Council in 1996.
As a leading member of Leicester City Council, he has held senior positions as various cabinet leads and over the last year served as High Bailiff.
Councillor Osman is of Indian origin, born in Kenya and came to the UK in 1971. He attended Moat Boys secondary, Charles Keene College and then Leicester Polytechnic, before graduating from Nottingham Trent University with a Post Graduate Diploma in Careers Education & Guidance in 1992.
He worked at Leicestershire Careers & Guidance Service from 1992 to 1998, before joining Leicester College as a Project Manager for the Overseas Qualification Development Programme.
Councillor Osman has worked with a number of charities and was instrumental in fundraising to build two entire villages and a school in Kutch Gujarat, India for orphan children, following an earthquake in Kutch in 2011.
He has been actively involved in local community affairs including, Ex-chair of Governors at Moat Community College and previous Governor of Regent College Sixth Form College; Ex-chair of the Governing Body and executive positions for 15 years with Highfields Community Association, a registered charity and a major local community centre; Founder member of Indiana Football Club, which is affiliated to the Leicestershire & County Football Association and Al-Hilal Muslim Youth Association, a local voluntary youth group; Lay prison observer with the Home Office for the East & South Yorkshire and was previously an ethnic Minority Member of HMP Ashwell.
Councillor Osman is an open minded, experienced and creative all-rounder. He possesses a good sense of humour and the ability to develop, motivate and support others, coupled with the ability to communicate comfortably at all levels. He is married to Shaina, who will serve as Deputy Lady Mayoress throughout his term in office and they have two children.
