1364 ROGER de BELGRAVE,
(47)
Clerk
Descended from an old local family whose patronymic as originally derived from the adjoining township of Belgrave. Members of the family were living at Leic. as early as the reign of King John. Although there can be little doubt that the above~named mayor was closely connected with the Belgrave group, his exact identity is a little difficult to determine. Roger de Belgrave of Belgrave, a person of note, occurs as the earl's receiver of the honour of Leic. in 1324. He was a knight of the shire in 1327 and 1338. By Margaret, his wife, daughter of Richard Belgrave, esq., he had a younger son, Roger, born about 1325 who was probably identical with the mayor. The latter, an energetic burgess, described in the records as "clerk," is believed to have been closely connected with the earl's household. He filled most of the municipal offices, was M.P. for the borough 1360, 1368, 1377 and 1383 ; married Elena (--), and died about 1400 leaving issue.
