1390 GEOFFREY CLERK als. OKEHAM

1390 & 1391 GEOFFREY CLERK als. OKEHAM,

(61)

(Mercer).

Parentage and ancestry unknown but probably a native of Oakham ; enrolled a free burgess 1362-3, was M.P. for the borough 1384, 1388, 1390 and 1391. During his mayoralty William de Humberston doubtless deputised for him. Geoffrey Clerk appears to have been an active burgess being much engaged on behalf of the town's affairs. He witnessed a number of deeds still extant, as mayor, between 30 March 1391 and 23 September 1392, clearly proving that he filled the civic chair, like several of his predecessors, two years in succession. Throsby states that he died during his term of office and that Richard Gamston was chosen to serve and complete the remainder of the term. This statement, however, is incorrect for we find Geoffrey Clerk sitting once again in Parliament for the borough in 1394 and his name appears in the records for some years later.
