1403 JOHN CHURCH

1403 JOHN CHURCH,

(71)

(Merchant).

In a recently printed pedigree, it is stated that this prominent fourteenth century merchant burgess was a son of John Church of Great Parndon, Essex, 1335, 1396, by his wife Catherine Wyncester. The local records show that he was returned to Parliament for the borough no less than eight times between 1399 and 1435. He was one of the bailiffs in 1413, filled other offices and again served as mayor in 1408 and 1422. Like many of his colleagues he was a benefactor to the official gild of Corpus Christi. At his death about

1440, he left issue- by Catherine his wife, a son John and a daughter Catherine. A Reynald Church, stated in the pedigree to have been a grandson of the mayor, was the ancestor of the Nantwich, Cheshire, branch of the family, who were later armigerous people of some note.
