1441 THOMAS CHARITY,
(92)
(Merchant).
Believed to have been a son of William Charity of Leic. living 1400. In an old deed he is described as a merchant. He was M.P. for the borough 1432, one of the bailiffs 1432~3, and again mayor 1453. In 1446 he was party to a suit (vide De Banco roll No. 743). He died soon after 1454 leaving issue.
Frequent mention is made in both national and local records of members of the Charity family, who occupied prominent positions in the civic life of Leic. as far back as the reign of Henry Ill. William Caritas was admitted a member of the gild merchant about 1226, John and Simon, his sons, in 1265, John Karitas in 1274, William Caritas 1291~2 and William Caritas, perhaps a son of the latter, was enrolled in 1326~7. A branch of the family was closely connected with Evington, co. Leic. William Charyte, a canon of Leic. abbey 1348, appears to have been a member of the Leic. group.
1453 THOMAS CHARITY. (2)
