Parentage and ancestry not established. He was appointed one of the borough chamberlains in 1472, alderman of the third ward 1484, was M.P. for the borough 1491, and again mayor 1493. During his first mayoralty, King Richard III stayed here on Sunday night, 20~21 August 1485 before proceeding to Bosworth Field where his army, 12,000 strong, were gathered and where the memorable battle was fought two days later on Tuesday, 22 August, when Richard, the last of the Plantagenets, was slain, the crown of England passing to his rival, Henry earl of Richmond, who was proclaimed king on the battlefield. The new king, Henry VII, came to Leic. after the battle and stayed here several days.
AId. Robert Croft died leaving issue in 1504 and was buried at St. Martin's. Will, dated 2 September 1503, was proved in the P.C.C., London, 12 July 1504.
