1541 HUGH ASTON

1541 HUGH ASTON,

(159)

(Gentleman).

Probably a son of Robert Aston of Leic. 1492 and connected with the armigerous family of the name earlier seated at Kings Bromley, co. Stafford. He was a man of some note being enrolled a free burgess, that is to say, admitted a freeman of the borough in 1516-7, and described on the roll as Hugh Aston, gentleman. Having filled various corporate offices, he was elected a burgess in Parliament for Leic. in 1555. He resided near the south gate and was alderman of the first ward in 1557. He either died or removed from Leic. soon after the latter date. His presumed brother, William Aston of St. Leonard's, Leic., died in 1533 and was buried in the "habba church before our lady sent brygyt." A namesake of the mayor became Town Clerk of Leic. in 1646.
