1557   JOHN HEYRICK,

(Ironmonger).

Second son of Thomas Heyrick of Leic., and brother of AId. Nicholas Heyrick (No. 167). He was born in 1513, enrolled a freeman 1534-5, elected a chamberlain 1543-4, and again mayor 1572. He resided in the Saturday market at the corner of Cheapside ; married Mary, daughter of John Bond of Ward End, co. Warwick, who died in 1611, by whom he had five sons and seven daughters. See her portrait in illustration, facing page 58.

AId. John Heyrick died 2 April (Hall Book says 4 April) 1589, aged 76, and was buried in St. Martin's church. M.I. there. His will, dated 10 March 1588, and still preserved, was proved at Leic. 7 September 1589. Among the memorials to the Heyricks at St. Martin's may be seen the following quaint inscription on an upright stone in the Heyrick chapel :-

"Here lyeth buried the bodie of John Heyricke of this parrish who departed this life ye 2 of Aprill 1589 beinge about ye age of 76 ; he did marry Marie ye daughter of John Bond of Wardend in the Countie of Warwicke, Esquire, who lived with ye said Marie in one house full 52 yeares and in all that tyme never buried man, woman nor child, though they were sometimes 20 in household, he had yssue by ye said Marie 5 sonns and 7 daugh.­ters, viz: Robert, Nichilas, Thomas, John and William, & daughters Ursula, Agnes, Marie, Elizabeth, Ellin, Christian & Alice. The said John was maior of this towne in anno 1559 & againe in anno 1572. The said Marie departed this life ye 8 of December 1611 beinge of ye age of 97 years. She did see before her departure of her children & childrens children & their children to the number of 142."

 

Population of Leic. 1558 estimated at 3,000.
