1563 RICHARD DAVY,
(178)
(Grocer).
The second son of Robert Davy of Leic. 1536, and a grandson of AId. Thomas Davy, mayor in 1488. He was born in or about the year 1520, enrolled a freeman of the borough 1541-2, elected a chamberlain 1549, a coroner 1560, and mayor a second time 1575; married, and according to St. Martin's registers, had issue. During his mayoralty the ancient Hall formerly belonging to the Gild of Corpus Christi was purchased by the corporate body. This structure, recently restored, was used for assemblies and municipal purposes until the opening of the present Town Hall in 1876. For a brief account of the Guildhalls of Leic. see Introduction, page xvi, where an illustration of this ancient Hall is given.
AId. Richard Davy was buried at St. Martin's in 1583, the parish register, known to be an imperfect transcript at that period, records the date in error as 28 July 1582. His will, dated 21 July 1583, was proved at Leic. 3 December following.
