1570 NICHOLAS ENGLISH

1570   NICHOLAS ENGLISH,

(184)

(Merchant of the Staple of Calais).

Probably a native of London; born about 1525, settled at Leic. and enrolled a freeman as a "stranger" 1559~60, later taking over the wool business previously carried on by AId. Thomas Davenport, who, as already stated, succeeded the Wigstons (see No. 129) ; was one of the borough bailiffs 1568 and patron of the living of Sapcote, co. Leic., in 1573. He married at St. Martin's 26 June 1559 Mary, the widow of AId. Thomas Davenport of Leic., by whom, who died in 1564, he had several children.

AId. English was dismissed from the corporate body in 1575 for "not dwelling in the town." He went to reside at Burton Grange, co. Leic., and dying there in 1577 was buried at Prestwold, co. Leic., 14 November of that year. His will, dated 20 September 1577, was proved at Leic. 15 April 1578. In this document he mentions his then wife, Annis, son Nathaniel, daughter Katherine and sister Elizabeth Baynbridge.
