1582   WILLIAM MORTON, (Mercer).

Fifth son of William Morton, yeoman, of Husbands Bosworth, co. Leic.; was born about 1534, enrolled a freeman of Leic. 1555-6, elected a chamberlain 1564 and again mayor 1596 and 1612. He married Alice, daughter of Wm. Berridge of Leic., by whom he had, with other issue, a son, Rev. William Morton, sometime archdeacon of Durham and of Newcastle-on-Tyne.

 

Ald. William Morton was buried at St. Martin's 24 October 1620. Inquisition taken after his death 18 January 1621, filed at the Public Record Office, London, Vol. 31, fo. 108. His will, dated 17 August 1620, was proved at Leic. 18 November the same year.

 

The Mortons entered their Pedigree at the Visitation of 1619 and recorded their Arms :-Argent, on a chevron gules between three demi,buckles, tongues pendant sable, a mullet or for difference. Crest, granted later :­A cock's head or, between two wings expanded azure. Plate 2.
