1615   WILLIAM IVE, (Vintner).

Admitted a free burgess of the borough as a "stranger," that is to say as a non~native, in 1595~6 ; was a councillor 1598, alderman 1600, a chamberlain 1604, M.P. for Leic. 1623~4 and again mayor 1625 and 1634. He was regarded as one of the most opulent burgesses of Leic. in his day. In 1631 he purchased the manor and advowson of Thorpe Constantine, co. Stafford, for £4,220, an im~ mense sum of money for those days. By Jane his wife, who died 16 May 1638, he had an only daughter and heiress, Susanna, baptized 18 October 1598, who married AId. Richard Inge of Leic. (No. 230).

'AId. Ive died 31 October 1641, aged 68, and was buried in St. Martin's church. The record of his burial, however, is not entered in the registers. His will, a lengthy document, dated 14 August 1641, was proved in the P.C.C., London, 20 December the same year, by his son~in~law and executor, Richard Inge. He was a considerable benefactor to the poor of Leic.

The following inscription was formerly to be seen in St. Martin's church ;-

"Here lieth the body of William lve, Esq.,

and lane his wife, which William departed this life the 31st of October, Anno Dam. 1641,

. which lane departed the 16th day of May, 1638, His age 68 her age 73."

(King James I. again visited Leic. August 1616).
