1629 ROGER COTES, (Mercer).

Fourth son of John Cotes of Aylestone, co. Leic., where he was baptized 8 May 1580 ; was admitted a free burgess of the borough in 1605~6, elected a chamberlain 1615 and an alderman in 1620. He married at St. Margaret's, Leic., 21 July 1607 E1len, daughter of AId. Robert Gillot, mayor in 1600, and had issue. Descendants living in the county until about 1750. At the Heralds' Visitation of co. Leic. 1619 the Cotes' entered their Pedigree and recorded their Arms :-Argent fretty azure, on a canton or, a lion rampant sable. Crest :-A cock proper, combed and wattled or. Plate 3.

AId. Roger Cotes was buried at St. Martin's 28 January 1635~6. Will proved in the P.C.C., London, in 1636.
