1636 RICHARD INGE

1636 RICHARD INGE, (Mercer).

(230)

Descended from a very old Leics. family. He was the second son of William Inge of Knighton, where he was born about the year 1592; was apprenticed to AId. Roger Cotes of Leic., mercer, and admitted a freeman in 1613~4, chosen a councillor 1614, a chamberlain 1621 and later an alderman. During his year of office as mayor, considerable additions and improvements were made to the mayor's parlour at the Guildhall, AId. Inge presenting a new mayor's seat, which still remains. He married twice, firstly at St. Martin's 28 October 1616 Susanna, daughter and heiress of AId. Wm. lve of Leic. (No. 213), by whom, who died 6 July and was buried there 8 July 1623, aged 25, M.I. under the chancel floor, he had issue, and secondly at St. Mary's 6 August 1629 Mary Watts by whom he also had issue.

AId. Richard Inge was dismissed from the corporate body 12 November 1649 for absenting himself from the meetings and for residing out of the town. He retired to his native place, Knighton, where he was buried 23 September 1663. Branches of the family later settled at Thorpe Constantine, co. Stafford (still represented) Coventry and elsewhere, the Very Rev. Wm. Ralph Inge, dean of St. Paul's, London, recently retired, being a lineal descendant of the above~named alderman.

The ancient arms of Inge as probably used by the above~named mayor, and formerly to be seen on one of the Ruding floor slabs in St. Mary's church, were :Argent, a chevron between three goats' heads erased sable. Later members of the family, including descend~ ants of the alderman according to Burke, have used the arms :-Or, on a chevron vert three leopard's heads caboshed, or. (Burke says argent), Crest :-Two halberds (Burke says battle~axes) in saltier argent, enfiled with a ducal coronet, or. Motto :-UBI AMOR !BI FIDES. (Where there is love there is faith)., Plate 3.
