Probably descended from the Clays of co. Derby. He was apprenticed to his kinsman, AId. Rowland Pusey of Leic., brewer, admitted free 1623~4, joined the corpora~ tion about 1630, elected an alderman 24 May 1646 and mayor for the second time in 1672. He married at St. Nicholas' 21 September 1624 Katherine Hunt by whom he had several sons and daughters. During his mayoralty King Charles II was solemnly proclaimed, when much feasting and rejoicing took place here in May and June 1660. A present of £300 in gold subscribed locally was forwarded to His Majesty, the mayor AId. Clay, with several aldermen and the two chamberlains, visiting London for the purpose of making the gift.
AId. Clay was buried at St. Martin's 26 March 1680.
Will, dated 8 March 1679, was proved at Leic in 1690.
Arms of Clay of Crich, co. Derby, as probably used by the Leic. branch :-Argent, a chevron engrailed between three trefoils slipped sable. Crest :-Two wings expanded argent, semee of trefoils slipped sable. Plate 4.
