1664   WILLIAM CALLIS, (Apothecary).

Eldest son of William Callis of Leic., tailor; was born about 1610, admitted a freeman in 1633, elected a councillor 1640, an alderman 15 March 1659~60 and one of the bailiffs in 1662. He married at Hinckley24 November 1636 Hellen Averne and by her, who died in 1657, had issue several sons and daughters.

During his mayoralty, James, Duke of Y ork, after~ wards King J amesIl, came to Leic. and was entertained by the mayor and corporation at the expense of £16 3s. lOd. King Charles Il granted a charter to the inhabitants of Leic. during this gentleman's term of office in January 1665. (See Thompson's Leic. p. 427).

AId. Callis was buried at St. Martin's 8 October 1672.

Will, dated 22 May 1671, was proved at Leic. 15 October 1672.
