1680 JOHN GOODALL, (Ironmonger).

Second son of Sampson Goodall of Earl Shilton, co. Leic., where he was baptized 29 December 1637. The parish register there thus records the entry: "1637 Johannes Goodall, filius Sampsonis, Gent., bapt. fuit 29 Decembris."

Having served his apprenticeship with AId. Thomas Overing of Leic., ironmonger, who was mayor in 1668, he was enrolled a freeman 1 December 1659, elected a chamberlain 1665 and an alderman 1671. By Sarah, his first wife, daughter of Abraham Rowe of London, she died 1689, he had a large family of eleven children, seven sons and four daughters, but had no issue by his  second wife, Appolina (--), who survived him. In 1663 he was taxed in respect of three nre,hearths in his house and in 1666 he issued a tradesman's token j was churchwarden of St. Martin's in 1670 and again mayor in 1690.

AId. Goodall was dismissed from the corporation by order of Common Hall 11 July 1699. He died 8 and was buried at St. Martin's 11 August 1720, aged eighty,four years, ((John Goodale" in register. M.I. there. Will proved in the P.C.C., London, in September 1720.

Inscription on a mural tablet on the south wall of St. Martin's church :-

"Near this place lyeth the

bodys of John Goodall, late of ye Borough and twice mayor of the same. He died 8th Aug. 1720, aged 84; and of Sarah his

wife, the daughter of Abraham Rowe, citizen of London, by whom he had 7 sons and 4 daughters."

The Goodalls were originally a Lincolnshire family.

In Elizabeth's reign a branch settled at Atherstone, co. Warwick, from which the Leic. Goodalls were descended. Richard Goodall of Earl Shilton entered his Pedigree at the countyVisitation of 1683. No arms were then ex, hibited, but the Leic. branch used the same arms as the Goodalls of Holywell, Lincs., viz :-Or, a pile sable, on a canton azure, a saltire engrailed argent. Crest:­A boar's head erased and erect sable plattee, ducally gorged or. Plate 4.
