Son of Edward Pate, gent., of London, and descended from the Pates of Eye Kettleby, co. Leic. He was born about the year 1638, was admitted a freeman of Leic. as a "stranger" and a "Chirugeon" 7 August 1667, a cham, berlain 1681, an alderman 1685, and for some years was the landlord of the inn known as "The Bear and Swan." His wife Mary, died in 1702. His brother, Rev. John Pate, was for some years rector of Newbold Verdon, co. Leic.
AId. Pate died without issue and was buried at St. Martin's 29 June 1705, aged about sixty,seven. His will, dated 4 January 1704,5, was proved at Leic. 15 July 1705.
The Pates of Eye Kettleby entered their Pedigree at the Leics. Heralds' Visitation of 1619 and recorded their Arms :-Argent, three Roman text R's sable, in chief a crescent gules for difference. Crest :-A stag's head cabossed argent, attired or ; between the attires a raven reguardant, wings expanded, sable. Motto :-PIETAS NUNQUAM MORITUR. Plate 5.
