1700 JOHN ABNEY, (Pewterer).

The eldest son of AId. Philip Abney of Leic., mayor in 1678 ; baptized at St. Mary's 7 June 1657, admitted a freeman 3 May 1679, a chamberlain 1684, bailiff 1685, alderman 1687 and a churchwarden of St. Martin's 1687. He married at Sapcote, co. Leic., 23 November 1682 Tabitha Bennett of Braunstone and by her, who died in 1718, buried at Braunstone, he had issue. His eldest surviving son, Rev. John Abney, B.A., was for many years vicar of Syston and died in 1744. One of the Alderman's daughters, Anne, married Rev. John Clayton, who became vicar of St. Nicholas', Leic., in 1720.

AId. Abney retired into private life, and having taken up his residence outside the borough, was eventually discharged from the corporation in September 1712. He settled at Braunstone where he was buried 23 July 1714. His will, bearing date 18 July 1714, was proved at Leic. 11 September following, by Tabitha Abney, his relict.
