Members of the Annis family from Sproxton, co. Leic., were living at Leic. in the reign of James I.
AId. Annis was the eldest son of James Annis of Leic. He was baptized at St. Margaret's 7 January 1650, enrolled a freeman 18 January 1669~70, became a member of the council 1686, a chamberlain in 1695 and an alderman 8 August 1699. By Martha, his wife, he had several children. He died at his residence in St. Nicholas' parish 18 October 1719, aged sixty~nine, and was buried in St. Margaret's churchyard two days later. M.I. there. Will, dated 1 June 1715, was proved at Leic. 31 October 1 no. His widow only survived him a few days.
On an altar tomb in St. Margaret's churchyard :-
"Here lieth the body of James Annis,
one of the aldermen of this Borough
and once mayor. He died the 18th
day of October 1719, aged 69.
Here lieth the body of Martha, the wife of James Annis, one of the aldermen of this Borough and once mayor. She died Nov. 5. 1719, aged 46."
