Son of Capt. Timothy Hemsley· of Burton on the Wolds, co. Leic., and descended from the Hemsleys or Helmsleys of Willoughby on the W olds, Notts., living in Elizabeth's reign. He was born about 1668, served his seven years' apprenticeship with Aid. Andrew Freeman of Leic., mercer, admitted a freeman 24 Decem, ber 1689, elected joint chamberlain 1702 and an alderman in 1708. In 1699 he was a churchwarden of St. Martin's.
By his wife Elizabeth, who was buried at St. Martin's 31 May 1711, aged forty,six, he had several sons and daughters (vide St. Martin's registers). His eldest son, Timothy, citizen of London, and free of the Mercers' Company, was enrolled a free burgess of Leic. during his father's mayoralty, 20 August 1718.
AId. Hemsley was buried at St. Martin's 17 December 1728, aged sixty. Will, dated 4 December 1728 (signs Helmsley), was proved in the P.C.C., London, 30 May 1729 by his son William, the executor. He bequeathed his great silver tankard to his son Timothy, legacies to other children and to the hospitals of Holy Trinity and St. John, Leic.
