A member of the Martin family of Lichfield, being a son of Simon Martin, jun., gent., of that city, and baptized at St. Mary's, Lichfield, 4 March 1676~7. His grand~ father, Simon Martin, gent., a Notary, died at Lichfield in 1681. The above~named mayor was apprenticed to Michael Johnson of Lichfield, bookseller, with whom he was living in Sadler Row and Market Street in 1692, when about sixteen years old. The distinguished Dr. Samuel Johnson, son of Michael, doubtless worked with him for a time. After completing his apprenticeship he spent a short time at Ashby de la Zouch. He settled at Leic. in 1701, being admitted a freeman as a stranger 16 September of that year, joining the corporation very soon afterwards. He was elected as one of the borough chamberlains in 1715, an alderman in 1721 and bailiff in 1727.
He married at St. Margaret's 22 June 1701 Anne, daughter of AId. Thomas Ayre (No. 284), and had, with other issue, a son, Thomas Martin, who succeeded him in his business and who was mayor in 1750.
Mr. AId. Martin was buried at St. Margaret's 4 March 1744 (Parish register). Administration of his personal estate and effects was granted by the Prebendal Court of the Peculiar of St. Margaret's 6 May 1745 to his son, Thomas Martin.
