Eldest son of AId. John Smalley of Leic., ironmonger, 1693, and descended from the Smalleys of Alvaston, co. Derby; was born 28 and baptized at St. Martin's 30 August 1702, enrolled a freeman 19 August 1727, joining the corporation soon afterwards. He was chosen one of the borough chamberlains 1738, was a church, warden of St. Martin's in 174 3A; married in 1734 Elizabeth, daughter of the Rev. Sir Richard Halford, 5th Bart. of Wistow, by whom, who died 11 June 1772, aged sixty,nine, M.l. at Norton juxta Galby, he had issue, one son and four daughters. Descendants still living. His
third daughter, Hester, married James Vaughan, M.D., of Leic., and they had a son Henry, afterwards created Sir Henry Halford, Bart., in right of his mother, a cousin of Sir Charles Halford, the last of the Halfords in the direct line.
Mr. AId. Smalley died 19 September 1763, aged sixty~ one, and according to the Leic. Journal his remains were deposited in the family burial place at Norton in this county 22 September, M.L there. Will proved in the P.C.C., London, in February 1764.
