1766 JOHN FISHER, (Baker).

Son of George Fisher of Barrow on Soar, co. Leic., framework knitter, and descended from the Fishers of Cossington, co. Leic.; served his apprenticeship with AId. Charles Tuffley, baker, mayor in 1718. He was born about the year 1716, enrolled a freeman of Leic. 29 August 1741, chosen a councillor 1746, a chamberlain 1753 and appointed an alderman in 1762 ; resided in Highcross Street, where he carried on a successful business as a baker, and latterly as a miller and maltster. Thompson says that he "was one of the few remaining Jacobites who were always ready to manifest their aversion to the reigning dynasty when occasion afforded." He married at Stoney Stanton, co. Leic., 12 March 1747 Susanna, daughter of Henry Cooper of that place, but by her, who died in 1784, he had no issue.

Mr. AId. Fisher died at Leic. in 1797 and was buried at Stoney Stanton 20 April of that year, near the remains of his wife. His will, dated 2 January 1781 with a codicil 28 June 1787, was proved at Leic. 3 May 1797. He devised most of his real property at Stoney Stanton, Earl Shilton, with the advowson of the church of. Peckleton and property at Leic. to his nephew, Henry Cooper, on condition the latter assumed the arms and surname of Fisher. His personal estate was sworn under £10,000.

Arms of Fisher believed to have been used by this alderman :-Or, two fleur,de,lis in chief and a king .. fisher bendways in base. Crest :-A kingfisher proper, charged on the breast with a fleur,de .. lis. Plate 6.
