Ald. James Cooper was the third son of Henry Cooper

of Nuneaton, tanner, where he was born 1718; served his apprenticeship with Henry Smith of Leic., baker, and eventually took up his freedom on completing his term 25 May 1741. He was one of the borough cham, berlains 1760 and an alderman in 1764; resided in Highcross Street where he had freehold property in 1775, married Elizabeth Taylor of Billesdon, by whom, who died 17 September 1800, aged seventy,seven, buried at All Saints', he had four sons and four daughters.

He died 24 April 1800, aged eighty,two, and was buried in All Saints' churchyard. M.I. there to him and his wife. Will, dated 16 March 1792, was proved at Leic. 7 July 1800.

The Coopers, originally from Cheshire or Lancashire, settled at Stoney Stanton, co. Leic., in the middle of the sixteenth century and entered their Pedigree at the Heralds' Visitation of the county in 1619. The family arms, as used after 1619 by the Stoney Stanton and Leic. branch were :-Gules, on a chevron between three
