1771   JOHN CARTWRIGHT, (Innholder).

Second son of AId. John Cartwright, mayor in 1741 ; was born 18 January and baptized at St. Martin's 4 February 1716,7, made free 15 August 1740, one of the borough chamberlains 1754 and appointed an alderman in 1767, elected mayor 21 September and sworn 18 November 1771, soon after which date he gave a sumptu, ous feast at the Guildhall.· He married at St. Martin's 29 November 1744 Frances Hackett, and by her, who died in 1783, he had issue four sons. Originally a framesmith by trade he later became an innholder. Adverse circumstances, however, compelled him to resign from the corporation and to accept the office of mace bearer a few years before his decease.

Mr. John Cartwright died 26 and was buried in St.

Martin's churchyard 29 April 1783, aged sixty,six. M.I. there. He was followed to the grave by the mayor, AId. Bishop, and several aldermen who had passed the chair.
