1773   RICHARD ROBERTS DRAKE, (Broker and Auctioneer).

The Drakes, an old family, were living here in the reign of Henry VIII. The above named gentleman was the eldest son of Thomas Drake of Leic., fellmonger. He was born in 1725, admitted a freeman 19 July 1753, was one of the borough chamberlains in 1765, later an alderman. In 1766 he was a churchwarden of St. Martin's. A man of antiquarian tastes, he possessed many relics of local interest, among them being King Richard's bedstead, now preserved at BeaumanorPark. He married twice and by his second wife had an only daughter and heiress, Elizabeth, born 1764, who married the Rev. Matthew Babington, vicar of Rothley 1787.

Mr. AId. Drake was a keen supporter of the various town improvements effected in his day for the public good. He died 25 and was buried at the end of the chancel in All Saints' churchyard 26 October 1799, aged seventy,four. M.I. there to him and second wife.
