Son of the Rev. Thomas Pocklington, sometime rector of Rotherby, co. Leic., and later vicar of St. Mary's, Leic., and believed to have been descended from a Notts. family; born about 1728, apprenticed in 1743 to AId. Thomas Phipps of Leic., mercer, admitted a freeman 4 September 1750 and later filled various corporate offices. Originally a draper, he was latterly an auctioneer. He married at North Luffenham, co. Rutland, 24 June 1750 Mary Bradgate of that parish and had issue several sons and daughters (vide St. Martin's registers).
Owing to adverse circumstances, AId. Pocklington in 1793 resigned his seat as a member of the Corporation. At a meeting of the aldermen, held 21 September of that year, it was resolved to allow him an annuity of twenty guineas during pleasure. He either died or removed from Leic. before 1800.
The thoroughfare known as Pocklington's Walk takes its name from this gentleman's family.
Arms of Pocklington of Notts. granted in 1761 and probably used by members of the Leic. branch :Ermine, three bendlets azure, on a chief or, as many martlets sable. Crest :-A demi,leopard rampant proper holding in the dexter claw an ostrich feather argent. Plate 6.
