1779 JOHN GREGORY, (Printer).

Descended from an old Derbyshire family, being the second son of John Gregory of Overton in that county, and born in 1727. He was enrolled a freeman of Leic. as a "stranger" 26 May 1752, was elected a councillor 1760, chamberlain 1765, later an alderman and J.P.; married and had two sons and three daughters, all baptized at St. Martin's. His second son, Rev. Joseph Gregory, B.A., was for some years vicar of St. Martin's and All Saints', Leic.

Mr. AId. Gregory was a printer. In May 1753 he commenced to publish the well known weekly paper, the "Leicester Journal," was one of the original pro~ moters of the Leic. Infirmary and it is on record that he "passed through life with integrity and honour," being held in respect by all who knew him. He died at the Adelphi Hotel, London, 22 March 1789, aged sixty~two, while there, says his M.L, "in the prosecution of a public good, the navigation and commerce of the Town of Leicester." His remains were conveyed to Leic. and interred in St. Martin's church 26 March. Mrs. Frances Gregory, his widow, died 11 April 1795, aged seventy~ one. M.L to both at St. Martin's.
