Eldest son of John and Ann Slater of Leic. and descended from the Slaters of Aylestone, co. Leic., born 20 October and baptized at St. Martin's 22 November 1759, admitted a freeman 16 May 1785, elected a joint chamberlain 1786 and later sworn an alderman.
He retired with the old corporation in 1835, died probably at his residence in High Street 24 March 1837, aged seventy-seven, and was buried in St. Martin's churchyard. Mural tablet in the church. Slater Street takes its name from this gentleman's family.
