1804          EDMUND SWINFEN, (Druggist).

Son of Richard Swinfen, sometime of Hinckley and later of Leic., surgeon, and descended from an ancient family seated at Swinfen, co. Stafford, as early as the reign of Henry II. At Camden's Visitation taken in 1619 the Leics. branch of the family, seated at Sutton Cheney from about 1446, entered their Pedigree and recorded their Arms:-Per chevron sable and argent, in chief three leopard's faces counter changed. Crest:-A boar's head erased azure, charged with a crescent argent for difference. Plate 6.

Mr. AId. Swinfen was baptized at Hinckley parish church 15 August 1760. He came to Leic. about 1783, and by order of Common Hall 28 July of that year, was allowed to purchase his freedom for £20, was one of the joint chamberlains 1788 and later sworn an alderman, resided and carried on his business in the Market Place. He died, leaving a son and successor, 17 and was buried at St. Martin's 19 September 1811, aged fifty-one. Mural tablet to him and his wife in the church.
