1812        JOHN FOX, (Grocer).

Son of John Fox of Leic., surgeon; baptized at St. Margaret's 24 November 1764, purchased his freedom as a "stranger" for £20, 25 June 1789, was residing in the Market Place in 1800, where he carried on the business of a grocer. After filling certain minor offices, he became borough treasurer in 1826. He died, presumably without leaving issue, 20 and was buried at St. Margaret's 28 October 1829, aged sixty-eight. Mural tablet in the church there.

Arms of Fox of Leic., Hereford and Ludlow: Argent, a chevron gules between three foxes' heads erased sable. Crest:-A fox passant gules. The blazon on the monument at St. Margaret's, Leic., reads: Argent, a chevron between three foxes' heads erased gules. Plate 6.
