1815 JOHN MANSFIELD

1815 JOHN MANSFIELD, (Banker).

(384)

The second son of AId. John Mansfield, mayor in 1793., was born here 13 and baptized at St. Margaret's 15 March 1778. At the death of his father in 1798, he succeeded to the well-established banking business in Gallowtree Gate and the Birstall House estate where he chiefly resided. He was admitted a free burgess of the borough 25 March 1800, married firstly at Thorney, Cambs., 16 February 1797 Sarah, daughter of Henry Ward, esq., of Thorney Abbey, and by her had seven daughters. Descendants of his second daughter, Mrs. Packe, are still living. By his second wife, Hannah Mary, only daughter and heiress of Thomas Harpur, esq., of Stamford, he had no issue.

Mr. Mansfield was for some years a J.P. and D.L. for the county, Lieut. Col. Commander of the Leic. Volunteers and subsequently the Leic. Militia. He died 9 January 1839, aged sixty-one, and his remains were interred in Birstall church where a mural tablet to his memory in the chancel still remains. This tablet says "he gained the confidence and esteem of all ranks" . . . and "was ever ready to relieve the poor and afflicted.”
