1818          JAMES BANKART, (Woolstapler).

Eldest son of Samuel Bankart and grandson of Abraham Bankart of Leic., surgeon, a gentleman of Hugenot descent, the first of the family to settle here about 1710. He was baptized at St. Mary's 22 March 1754, admitted a freeman 28 September 1779, joined the corporation about 1795, was a chamberlain in 1802 and retired with the old body in 1835. He died at his residence in Belgrave Gate 27 December 1848, aged ninety-four, leaving issue. His daughter Sarah, born 1797, married Dr. John Nedham of Leic., and had issue.

The remains of Mr. James Bankart were laid to rest in St. Mary's churchyard 2 January 1849 where a stone to his memory and to his wife still remains.
