The Brewins are an old Leic. family. AId. Robert Brewin, the above named mayor, eldest son of Robert Brewin, hosier, was born at Leic. in 1786 and admitted a freeman 1 January 1813. He was elected a member of the newly formed council for North St. Margaret's Ward 26 December 1835, appointed a J.P. 1836 and an alderman 9 November 1844; married in 1810 Hannah, daughter of Thomas Paget of Ibstock, and a sister of the preceding mayor, by whom, who died 1869, he had issue.

 

Mr. Robert Brewin died at his residence at Birstall House 2 August 1860, aged seventy .. four, and was buried in the parish churchyard there. His MJ. in the church states "Few were his equals in intellectual qualities and attainments, and the study and cultivation of the beauties of nature were the delight and occupation of his life." His will, dated 13 January 1858 with five codicils of various dates, a lengthy document of 138 folios, was proved at Leic. 12 November 1860 by the oaths of Robert Brewin, son, and Joseph Whetstone, the executors. Effects sworn under £45,000.
