1839 JOSEPH WHETSTONE, (Wool Spinner).
(404) Eldest son of ]oseph Whetstone of Leic. and descended
from the Whetstones of Nuneaton and Bulkington, co. Warwick. He was born at Leic. in 1799, admitted a freeman 4 December 1823, elected a member of the newly formed council 26 December 1835 for All Saints' Ward, ].P. 1839 and an alderman 9 November 1847. He was offered a Knighthood soon after the marriage of Queen Victoria in 1840, an honour, however, which he felt with his usual modesty, obliged to decline. He married and had issue.
AId. Whetstone died at his residence, Highfield Street, on Sunday, 12 January 1868, aged sixty,nine, and was buried at the Welford Road Cemetery. M.I. Will proved at Leic. 4 April 1868 on the oath of William
