Son of John Stokes of Kingston on Soar, Notts., where he was born 6 February 1784, and descended from an old Notts. family. He settled at Leic. about 1809, was returned to the newly formed town council 26 December 1835 for East St. Mary's Ward, appointed an alderman 24 June 1840, again mayor 1841, J.P. for the borough 1836 and for the county 1849, and High Sheriff of Leics. 1850. He purchased the New Parks estate and erected the mansion house there; married at St. Margaret's, Leic., 2 April 1822 Mary, daughter and heiress of Thomas Joyce of Leic., by whom, who died in 1823, he had an only daughter and heiress, Mary Joyce, who married in 1858 Hugh Henry Robertson Aikman, esq., of the Ross, Hamilton, Lanarkshire.
Mr. Stokes died at his residence, New Parks, 12 October 1867, aged eighty-three, respected by a large circle of friends. Of him it has been said that he manifested great independence, originality of view and sentiment. He read and thought for himself in reference to all matters. His remains were conveyed to Kingston, Notts., and interred in the family vault in the church, yard. M.I. there. Will proved at Leic., 16 December 1867 by Joseph Whetstone of Leic., Thomas Tertius Paget of Humberstone and the Rev. Robert Martin of Anstey Pastures, the executors. Effects sworn under £35,000.
