Son of Daniel and Mary MelIor of Oldham, Lancs., where he was born 1 October and baptized at St. Peter's church there 19 October 1780. He settled at Leic. about 1825 and for a time carried on business in Cheapside as a hat manufacturer, but latterly lived in retirement. Elected a councillor 26 December 1835 for East St. Margaret's Ward, chosen an alderman 9 November 1838, was high bailiff 1836~1844 and appointed a J.P. in
1839. During his mayoralty the Bye Laws of the borough came into full operation in April 1845.
Mr. MelIor married at St. Martin's, Leic., 25 Novem, ber 1806 Catherine, daughter of Wm. MitchelI of Leic., and by her, who died 25'1anuary 1837, aged fifty,nine, he had besides other issue a son John, afterwards the Rt. Hon. Sir John MelIor, kt., one of Her Majesty's Judges of Assize, of Kingsdown, co. Kent.
AId. MelIor died 10 and was buried at the Welford Road Cemetery 14 August 1861, aged eighty,one. M.L there. Will proved at London 15 October 1861 by John MelIor of 2, Doctor Johnson's Buildings, Inner Temple, City of London, esq., one of Her Majesty's Counsel, son of deceased, the surviving executor.
