1850 JOHN DOVE HARRIS, (Hosier).

1856 14 June

 

Second son of Ald. Richard Harris, mayor in 1843, was born 1 April 1809, admitted a freeman 14 May 1830, elected a councillor 1 November 1839 for East St. Mary's Ward, an alderman 9 November 1850, again mayor 1856, J.P. for the borough and county, and Deputy Lieutenant for co. Leic. In July 1865 he was returned as one of the Parliamentary representatives for the borough, but retired from those duties in 1874, owing to ill health. He married in 1831 Emma, daughter of George Shirley, esq., of Tamworth, by whom, who died in 1896, he had an only daughter, Emma Dove, who married in 1855 Sir Wm. Henry Salt, Bart., of Maplewell, co. Leic.

Mr. John Dove Harris died at his residence, Ratcliffe Hall, co. Leic., 20 November 1878, aged sixty-nine, and was interred in the churchyard there 25 November. M.I. His will, dated 26 August 1876, with three codicils, was proved at Leic. 10 January 1879 by the oaths of Thomas Fielding Johnson and Samuel Stone, the executors named in the will, and Alfred John Hamel, the executor named in the third codicil. Effects sworn under £45,000.
