Son of John Ellis, esq., of Beaumont Leys, near Leic., by Martha Shipley, his wife. He was born 7 January 1817, joined the council 1 November 1854 being returned for West St. Mary's Ward, an alderman 19 August 1861 and appointed a J.P. in 1862. In 1858 he became chairman of the Midland Railway Company, in succes~ sion to his father, which office he held until his death. He was a prominent member of the Society of Friends ; married Emma, daughter of Mr. John Burgess of Wigston Magna, by whom he had issue.
Mr. Ellis died at his residence in the Newarke, Leic., 3 December 1879, in his sixty,third year and was buried at the Welford Road Cemetery. M.1. there. Probate of his will with a codicil being granted at Leic. under certain specialities 30 December 1879, to John Edward Ellis of Nottingham and George Henry Ellis of Leic., sons, the executors. Personal estate under £90,000.
