A native of Yorkshire; born 7 March 1804, joined the council 20 November 1866 being returned for East St. Mary's Ward, elected an alderman 3 September 1872 and was high bailiff of the borough 1874,78. He married firstly in 1839 Mary Ann Barsby and secondly a Miss White, but does not appear to have had any issue. Previous to his coming to Leic., he resided at Great Wigston and Kilby Bridge, where he held an office in connection with the Grand Junction Canal. He died at his residence, Prebend Terrace, Leic., 28 March 1878, in his seventy,fifth year and was buried at the Welford Road Cemetery. M.I. His will, with three codicils, was proved at Leic. 9 May 1878 by George Foxton Hornsby of Huddersfield, co. York., timber merchant, nephew, George Watson of Far Headingley, near Leeds, co. York., hide and skin broker, Thomas Clarke of Birmingham, co. Warwick, commercial traveller, and James Withers of Burbage, co. Leic., farmer, the executors. Personal estate under £18,000.
