The Kempsons are a Notts. family, where the name is met with in the records of East Leake and other places in the immediate vicinity. The above named gentleman was a son of Thomas Kempson, formerly of East Leake, by his wife, Charlotte Stokes of Kingston on Soar, and was born at the latter place in 1895. His father, an agriculturist on the estate of Lord Belper, died when he was a boy and young William Kempson later settled at Leic. He became a pupil at a school conducted by the Rev. Charles Berry, and on leaving, entered into the hosiery business of his uncle, Thomas Stokes, and later took up the manufacture of boots and shoes as the chief section. He entered the council 21 November 1865 being returned for East St. Mary's Ward, elected an alderman 8 October 1873, appointed a magistrate 1879 and was again mayor in 1890 when in his eighty,sixth year. He married about 1853 Elizabeth, daughter of John Flower, the celebrated Leic. artist, and by her had issue, two sons.
Mr. William Kempson died at his residence, 96 (now 102) Regent Road, Southfields, Leic., 11 October 1893, aged eighty,eight, and was buried at the Welford Road Cemetery. M.I. Will proved at Leic. 15 Nov. 1893 by Elizabeth Kempson, widow, and John Flower Kempson, chemical manufacturer. Effects £36,028 7s. 7d.
