Son of William and Elizabeth Winterton of Leic. and descended from a very old Leics. family; was born 1819, elected a councillor 2 May 1871 for East St. Margaret's
Ward, an alderman 28 April 1874 and later in 1874 appointed a J.P. In 1880 he was high sheriff of Leics., and in the same year he unsuccessfully contested the borough for a seat in Parliament. He married in 1846 Sarah Elizabeth, daughter of John Hincks of Humber, stone, by whom he had issue.
Mr. Winterton retired from the corporation in 1889.
He died at his residence, Prebend Street, 2 December 1892, in his seventy,third year and was buried at the Welford Road Cemetery. His will was proved at Leic. 6 May 1893 by William Henry Winterton and Frank Winterton, gentlemen, and Fanny Winterton, spinster, the executors. Effects £64,959 lOs. 3d.
