Eldest son of Robert Bennett of Leic., where he was born in 1830, and descended from the Bennetts of Syston and Queniborough, co. Leic. Some members of this family are buried in the Harvey Lane Chapel graveyard. He was admitted a freeman of the borough 5 March 1852, elected a councillor for East St. Mary's Ward 17 December 1866, afterwards sitting for West St. Mary's Ward, chosen an alderman during his first mayoralty, 20 April 1880, again mayor 1880 and appointed a J.P. in 1884. Owing to failing health he resigned his seat on
the aldermanic bench in 1890.
Mr. John Bennett died at his residence, The Limes, Princess Road, Leic., 2 November 1906, in his seventy~ seventh year, leaving issue, and was buried a few days later at the We1ford Road Cemetery. M.L Probate of his will was granted at London 21 December 1906 to Henry Swain Bennett, corn merchant, Frederick William Bennett, M.D., sons, and Joseph Henry Baker, chartered accountant. Effects £58,876 6s. 4d.
