Son of Henry Chambers, builder, of Leic.; was born 16 October 1820, educated privately, joined the council 1 November 1863 being returned for Middle St. Mar, garet's Ward, an alderman 10 June 1875, a J.P. 1884, one of the Founders of the Leic. Permanent Building Society, a scheme which was originated in his house, a liberal in politics and an active member and supporter of the Congregational churches in Leic. The chief event of his year of office was the opening of the Abbey Park, Leic., by their Royal Highnesses, the Prince and Princess of Wales, 29 May 1882, for which extensive preparations had been made. AId. Chambers had previously, in January of the same year, had the honour of presenting the Prince with an address on behalf of the corporation, when His Royal Highness passed through Leic. to visit the Earl of Stamford at Bradgate House, and later, he had the distinguished honour of welcoming both the Prince and the Princess on behalf of the citizens, and entertain, ing them at luncheon at the opening of the Park.

Mr. Chambers married twice but died childless at his residence, Ingleneuk, Stoneygate Road, Leic., 25 May 1916, in his ninety,sixth year and was interred at the We1ford Road Cemetery. His will was proved at the Principal Registry, London, 7 November 1916 by Arthur Chambers, builder, nephew, and Joseph Henry Baker, chartered accountant. Effects £9,112 14s. 3d.
