1882          FRANCIS HEWITT, (Bookseller and Newspaper Publisher).

Son of Francis Hewitt of We1ford, Northants., and descended from an old family seated there in the reign of Charles I. He was born at We1ford 1 May 1832, elected a member of the council for North St. Margaret's Ward 13 October 1871, married twice (1) in 1859 Catherine Russell and (2) in 1871 'Elizabeth Cook, leaving issue by both wives. His youngest child, Arthur Leicester Hewitt, was born during his father's mayoralty, 4 May 1883. This event gave rise to an interesting ceremony being performed in the council chamber 23 July 1883, when the mayor and mayoress were presented with a handsome silver cradle on behalf of the committee and subscribers.

Mr. Francis Hewitt died at his country residence, Wollaston House, Hunstanton, Norfolk, 25 October 1897, aged sixty,five, and was buried in Old Hunstanton churchyard. His will was proved at Leic. 20 January 1898 by Elizabeth Hewitt, widow, Francis Hewitt and Walter Scott, newspaper proprietors, the executors. Effects £28,197 11s. 7d.
