The Underwoods, a family of considerable antiquity, were living at Gaddesby, co. Leic., in the reign of Henry VIII. John Underwood, the subject of our notice, was a son of William Underwood, a farmer, of Gaddesby, and was born there 4 September 1833. He entered the council chamber as a representative for All Saints' Ward 2 November 1874, was elected an alderman 29 July 1890 and appointed a J.P. in 1892 ; married Sarah Dilks of Barsby, co. Leic., by whom he had a large family of six sons and three daughters to reach adult age.
Owing to poor health Mr. Underwood retired from the corporation a short time before his demise. His death took place at his residence, 23, Freeschool Lane, Leic., 4 December 1901, aged sixty~eight, and his remains were interred at the Welford Road Cemetery. M.l. there. Will proved at Leic. 5 May 1902 by Sarah Under~ wood, widow, Henry Norman, gentleman, Alfred Thomas Underwood and Edwin James Underwood, plumbers, George Underwood, florist, Francis Under, wood, brickmaker, and John Storey, solicitor, the executors.
