1896  JOSEPH HERBERT MARSHALL,

(Music and Pianoforte Dealer).

 

Eldest son of James Marshall of Leic., formerly of Zouch Mills near Hathern, co. Leic., and born at the latter place 13 June 1851 j educated privately. Elected a member of the town council in the conservative interests 1 November 1888 for East St. Mary's Ward, an alderman 1909, was a magistrate for the borough 1892 and also for the county. For some years he was chairman of the Conservative Association and leader of the party in Leic. Founder of the Philharmonic Society, a freemason and P.M. of St. John's Lodge, Leic. He had the honour of being presented to Queen Victoria at Buckingham Palace and was KNIGHTED by King Edward VII 9 November 1905 j married 22 July 1873 Clara Ann, daughter of the late Vittore Albini of Garenzo, Italy, and had issue, two sons and two daughters.

During his mayoralty 22 June 1897, the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria was commemorated at Leic. For the Jubilee Endowment Fund at the Infirmary, inaugurated by the mayor, £10,000 was raised.

Sir Joseph Herbert Marshall died at Ratcliffe Lodge, Knighton, Leic., 31 August 1918, aged sixty,seven, and was buried at the We1ford Road Cemetery. Probate of his will was granted at Leic. 31 December 1918 to Ernest James Marshall, Herbert Albini Marshall, musical in, strument dealers, and Florence Edith Marshall, spinster, the executors. Effects £47,748 18s. 8d.
